Description
A Reuben sandwich is a classic American favorite renowned for its layers of bold flavors and hearty ingredients. This iconic sandwich typically features tender corned beef, tangy sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and creamy Russian dressing, all nestled between slices of grilled rye bread. The corned beef is thinly sliced and brimming with savory richness, complemented by the tangy crunch of sauerkraut and the smooth, melted Swiss cheese. The Russian dressing adds a creamy and slightly sweet element that perfectly balances the savory components. Grilled to perfection, the rye bread provides a toasty, golden exterior that enhances the sandwich’s overall texture and taste. Whether enjoyed for lunch or dinner, the Reuben sandwich is a timeless classic that never fails to satisfy cravings and delight taste buds with its irresistible combination of flavors and textures.
Ingredients
For 4 Sandwiches:
Bread: Traditional Reubens use Rye bread, however I like to use the bakery bread from Walmart, that is called the everything flavored bread. Either works well.
3/4 of a pound of deli sliced corned beef.
Provolone Cheese- about 8 slices
Sauerkraut
1000 Island Dressing (also called Russian)
Butter for buttering both sides of the bread.
Equipment:
Spatula and a pan for cooking the sandwiches. I use this one.
Instructions
Butter both sides of each slice of bread. Preheat the skillet to about 325 degrees.
Cut the meat and cheese to fit the bread size. Warm meat and sauerkraut in the microwave for 30 seconds, just to take the chill off so the inside of the sandwich is not cold.
On the skillet, place all 4 buttered side down pieces of bread, add one slice of cheese, then meat, then sauerkraut, then dressing, then one more piece of cheese, please the dry side of the second piece of bread on top (buttered side needs to be out to grill the sandwich)
Then smash the sandwich down to press it together and squishes the air out. Flip when the first side is golden brown. Smash down the sandwich again, then when the second side is golden brown, cut and serve.
I serve with onion rings, or french fries.
Notes
If you have picky kids, this still tastes great if you omit the sauerkraut and dressing. I did this for years with our kids and they still loved it.
Cost of 4 sandwiches is about $15.00 due to the cost of the corned beef in the deli.
