This cake does not photograph well, but it is the best cake from my Grandma Irene’s collection. In fact my daughter specifically asks me to make this for her on her birthday in place of any other kind of cake!
Moist tender and the perfect blend of chocolate.
PrintIrene’s Chocolate Cake (A Favorite)
Description
This does not photograph well, but I can assure you it is the best chocolate cake on the planet.
Ingredients
Cake:
- 2 cups of flour
- 2 cups of sugar
- 3 Tbsp cocoa
- 2 sticks of butter
- 1 cup of water
- 2 eggs well beaten
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp baking soda
Icing:
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
Instructions
For the Cake:
- Sift together the flour and sugar.
- In a saucepan combine the cocoa powder, butter and cup of water. Bring to a boil in the saucepan.
- Pour the hot liquid over the flour and sugar and stir.
- Mix above and add the eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and baking soda. Mix together.
- Pour into a greased 9×13 inch pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 23-26 minutes, test the center for doneness.
- Allow to cool before frosting.
Icing:
In a saucepan, add the butter, milk and sugar. Boil for one minute. Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips, whisk quickly until eat chips are melted, pour over the cake and spread icing very quickly as the icing will harden fast.
Enjoy the cake!
Notes
If you prefer to not have the cake so sweet, you can just dust the cake with powered sugar in place of the frosting.
